Alternative Testing

Student Accessibility Services (SAS) will provide alternative testing for students who are eligible and request the accommodation. Alternative testing accommodations could include extended time for testing, testing in a distraction-reduced environment, use of computer for adaptive software, CCTV and text enlargement, to name some of the more common requests.

Tips for Students

In order to schedule exams through GB Access, eligible students need to select alternative testing as an accommodation in GB access for each class. You need to do this for every term. Tips below are things you can do to can help ensure your test accommodations go smoothly.
  • Schedule quizzes and exams. Schedule your quizzes and exams three business days ahead, and your final exams five business days ahead.
  • Try out approved assistive/adaptive technology before your first exam.
  • Remind instructors about your alternative test accommodations a week before each exam. Communicating with faculty about alternative testing is the your responsibility.
  • Show up on time to take the exam. Any time lost due to being late will not be added back into the exam time.
  • Check that the amount of time given is correct BEFORE beginning exams on Canvas,

This letter is intended for students emailing their faculty to request testing accommodations. We suggest that you copy and paste the text below into your email. Then, edit and personalize the text as appropriate.

[Subject Line]: Test accommodations for <INSERT COURSE NAME/NUMBER>

Dear <INSERT GREETING/INSTRUCTOR NAME>,

My name is <INSERT YOUR NAME>. I am in your <INSERT COURSE NAME/NUMBER> class. I work with Student Accessibility Services and am approved for disability-related accommodations. I would like to meet with you to discuss the accommodations I would like to request in your class and to complete the Testing Agreement for the semester.

I am available during your office hours on <INSERT DAYS/TIMES> and would like to meet with you then to discuss this privately.

OR

I am not available to meet during your office hours. I am available the following days and times: <INSERT DAYS/TIMES>. Please let me know if any of these options would work for you.
